Draw Ornaments, Carving in AutoCAD

For those who work for a construction firms, it is rare for them to draw an ornaments or a carving details. Most of the drawings there are almost vertical and horizontal lines, circles and few arcs, but not in furniture industry.
In furniture industry, you will experience a lot of ornament drawings and carving details. This tutorial will show you how to draw a carving detail in autocad. I am using version 2000, but whatever version this will work because this is 2D only.

First of all, you need to make a new drawing then save it to whatever filename you choose. Make sure that your units is set up to millimeters.

We will be using a scanned image here. You can right click the image below and click Save Image As.

1.)You need to insert the image into your drawing environment.

Image

The Image Manager will come out.

Image

2.)Click Attach, locate the jpeg file. Click Ok. Now the image is in your drawing environment. See below.

Image

3.)Things to change; make sure you use a color that is contrast to an image, in this tutorial I choose Layer0 and color red. But you can choose your own. And also make sure that you are in orthogonal mode, else press F8 in your keyboard.
4.)Draw a vertical line, tracing the line in the left side. Here we need to scale the drawing first so that we can have a desired dimension.

Image

5.)We need to have a 5” or 127mm vertical dimension. In the command line type,
scale-> enter->select objects. (Note : you must select the line and the image, you can select by windowing it.)

6.)There is an option to specify base point, click the middle point. As shown below.

7.)Another option here is to specify scale factor. Type r -> enter. Here we need to use the reference scale factor so we can enter the length we desired. But you can experiment by entering other numbers.
8.)After entering r, click the two end points.

9.)Type 125 -> enter.

Image

10.) Put dimension to see if the line is 125mm. You drawing should look like this.

Now you have finished the first part. Create a new drawing, insert an image, then scale it to your desired length.

Next is tracing the whole drawing.
Measure the rectangle by entering distance command from right to left.
1.)On command line, Type di->enter.

2.)Click the the line on the right to the left.

You got 530 something there. But we need to be 0,0 in dimension. Offset the line from left to right.
3.)On command line, Type offset->enter->530, click the red line, click on the right.
4.)Finish the rectangle by using line command.
After you finished the rectangle, you can edit it to become a polyline so that it is easy to offset it.
5.)On command line, Type pe->enter. Select any of the four lines, then type->y->enter.Type->j->enter, to join and to turn it into one. When you click it, the four lines become a polyline now.

6.)Now (with the use of offset command) offset the rectangle to make a nested rectangle inside. Use the dimension below.

Now it's time to draw the carving inside the rectangle.
Key commands to finish this are:

Polyline->enter.
Arc-> enter.
S->enter.

After you command polyline there are a lot of options. The only options you're going to use here are arc, then second point, then you need to click to specify the first and end points then enter second point again. See the image below for your guide.

So after I enter polyline, I just enter A for arc and S for second point, then S again and so on until you press enter to finish.

Draw the carving.

1.)On command line type PL->enter->arc->enter.
2.)Click the point as shown on the image.

3.)Type S-> enter, then click as shown on the image.
4.)Type S-> enter, then click as shown on the image.( repeat this command).

5.)Press enter to finish.

You have to repeat this until you finish the carving.
You carving should look like this.

Final note: This kind of work requires practice and patience because you need to proportion it. The more your polyline has grips the more you can drag it.

Select the lines to view the grips, then just drag it until it becomes smooth. You need to draw the half of it then mirror it.

 That's all.
